Hinterland Group Marks 20 Years of Trenchless Infrastructure Growth
Hinterland Group, the Florida-based contracting firm now celebrating 20 years in business. The company got its start because founder and CEO Daniel Duke saw a void in the contracting community.
Figuratively speaking, the word “hinterland” describes the uncharted areas that lie beyond what is visible or known, above ground or below it. A fitting name for a company that spends its days in the underground systems of pipes, waterways, and infrastructure that run beneath every surface, sustaining the communities built on top of them.
“Daniel took advantage of this void in the infrastructure space by trying his hand at a lift station installation project. From there, it became evident that the real need was for a one-stop, comprehensive solutions provider in the infrastructure rehabilitation and repair space,” says Jacob Crowe, vice president of the trenchless division and business development. Crowe joined Hinterland in 2020 to lead its trenchless division.
The early projects led to more work, and the team grew around people such as Chase Rogers. Rogers joined right out of college working in the field with lift station rehabilitation projects. He quickly grew through the ranks of estimating and project management, now serving as the company’s COO.
Vertical Integration Drives Growth
The next milestone in the company’s history came in 2010: the creation of its Refratta HAC 100 calcium aluminate product.
“This marked our entry into vertical integration through our sister company, Global Materials Co.,” says Rogers. “Vertical integration, along with controlled growth, has been our approach and it has served us well in new markets.”
Continuing along this trajectory, Hinterland pushed deeper into the trenchless space with cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) and other trenchless rehabilitation methods.
