Texas Contractor’s Pre-chlorinated Pipe Bursting Program A Model of Efficiency

SKE Construction LLC, of Cypress, Texas, is focused. The utility contractor has taken trenchless pipe bursting efficiency and effectiveness for water main rehab and replacement to a level that most contractors would be envious of.

SKE Construction has developed an approach to pre-chlorinated pipe bursting that delivers results for updating deteriorating asbestos concrete (AC). These water mains are present throughout Houston and the surrounding areas.

“Approximately 85 to 90 percent of the projects we do are AC pipe related,” says Clint Borgstedt, SKE Construction senior project manager. “And static pipe bursting is pretty much one of the fastest, safest, and most cost-effective ways to replace AC pipe.”

Recently, SKE Construction demonstrated its high skill level and jobsite efficiency on a significant watermain pipe bursting project. The work was for the Reid Road Municipal Utility District (MUD) 1 near Houston.

This particular project included bursting and replacing a total of 13,098 ft of 4-in., 6-in., 8-in., and 12-in. diameter watermain. While most of the project consisted of size-to-size replacements, some of the 4-in. pipes were upsized to 6-in.. Replacement of the 6-, 8- and 12-inch pipes was size for size. According to Borgstedt, installation of most of that pipe took place in the 1970s.

SKE Construction crews utilized the Grundoburst 800G static pipe bursting system from trenchless equipment manufacturer TT Technologies. According to TT Technologies pipe bursting specialist Corey Renick, for this project, the static system is ideal.

“Static pipe bursting offers both the power and versatility in terms of product pipe choices, to accommodate a wide range of project scenarios,” he explains. “What Clint and SKE Construction are doing shows what a skilled pipe bursting crew can do with that system.”
