Leo Barbera, a pioneering figure in the trenchless technology industry known for his contributions to auger boring equipment design, manufacturing and education, died Oct. 6.

Barbera devoted decades to advancing trenchless technology, combining his experience as a contractor and manufacturer with a commitment to sharing knowledge and helping others succeed in the industry.

“It doesn’t do any good to have knowledge if you don’t share it with somebody,” Barbera said in a 1997 interview in Trenchless Technology, expressing a philosophy that guided his career.

Barbera co-founded American Augers Inc. in 1971 with two partners, after entering the auger boring business through Richmond Manufacturing Co. He bought out his partners in 1974 and led the Ohio-based company until 1989. During his tenure, American Augers grew from seven employees in 1973 to 72 in 1989.

Under Barbera’s leadership, the company emphasized equipment quality, customer service and education. He helped advance auger boring equipment design by incorporating greater horsepower and thrust, improving machine stability and making equipment easier to repair.

After leaving American Augers, Barbera continued pursuing new opportunities in equipment manufacturing, including founding Horizontal Holes International Inc. and developing multipurpose equipment designed to accommodate auger boring, microtunneling and pipe jacking applications. In 1979, Leo was joined at American Augers by his brother, Jim Barbera. Jim went on to found Barbco Inc. after Leo sold American Augers.

Barbera also played an active role in industry organizations. He led the National Utility Contractors Association’s Trenchless Technology Committee, served as chairman of the North American Society for Trenchless Technology’s Horizontal Earth Boring Committee, served on the Industry Advisory Board for the Trenchless Technology Center (TTC) at Louisiana Tech, and remained involved with NASTT and the Associated General Contractors of America.

In 1997, he was named Trenchless Technology’s Person of the Year. In 2018, along with his brother Jim, was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the TTC. TTC also named a new training facility the Barbera Education, Research and Training center in honor of the brothers.

Before entering the trenchless industry, Leo worked as a horse trainer, a passion he maintained throughout his life. Barbera was a founding member of the National Snaffle Bit Association (NSBA) and served as its first president. NSBA renamed its President’s Award the Leo Barbera President’s Award in 2018. He was also an avid golfer.

Throughout his career, Barbera was recognized for his technical knowledge, entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to share his experience with others. His influence helped shape the development of auger boring technology and the broader trenchless industry.
