Trenchless Technology Announces its 2014 Projects of the Year Winners for New Installation and Rehabilitation
September 22, 2014
Trenchless Technology magazine, the leading publication covering the trenchless marketplace, has announced the winners of its annual Projects of the Year for 2014. Projects are awarded in New Installation and Rehabilitation categories.
The Project of the Year for New Installation is the New Jersey — New York Expansion project, which was an expansion of Spectra Energy’s Texas Eastern Transmission and Algonquin Gas Transmission pipeline systems to deliver new, critically needed natural gas supplies to the New Jersey and New York areas. The project involved nine challenging horizontal directional drilled (HDD) crossings through densely populated terrain; crossings ranged in length of 3,008 ft to 8,101 ft, with five of the crossings requiring contractor Michels Corp. to employ the intersect method. In all, 10 drill rigs of 1.2 million lbs of capacity were used, as well as an extensive lineup of other equipment.
Other projects recognized in the New Installation category are: Woonasquatucket CSO Interceptor (Runner-up); Patuxent River 230 kV Transmission Line HDD Crossing (Honorable Mention); and Oakley Station CSO 551 and CSO 553 Separation Sewer (Honorable Mention).
The Project of the Year for Rehabilitation is the Rehabilitation of a 39-in. Water Transmission Main on Calder Road in Texas. This project for the Gulf Coast Water Authority and the City of League City, Texas, represents what is considered to be the largest diameter, high pressure, fully structural pressure pipeline rehabilitation project completed in North America. The Swagelining project, completed by Murphy Pipeline Contractors, required a fully structural solution at an operating pressure of 125 psi.
Other projects recognized in the Rehabilitation category are: Trinity River Recreation Area Pipe Burst (Runner-up); Granville Gorge Water Main Replacement Using Pipe Bursting (Honorable Mention); and Reading, Pa., System Capacity Upgrade (Honorable Mention).
Winners will be featured in the October 2014 issue of Trenchless Technology magazine and formally recognized at the 2015 No-Dig Show, to be held in Denver March 15-19. Winners are chosen on the basis of technical advancement, technical complexity, milestones and records achieved, interaction and cooperation and advancement of the trenchless industry.
