Mortimer the Sewer Rat Hits the Road!

Mortimer the Sewer Rat made his first road trip with his new owners and recently visited the San Francisco Bay Tunnel project site. There, a joint venture team of Michels Corp., Jay Dee Contractors Inc., and Frank Coluccio Construction Co. was scheduled to launch a Hitachi Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) on a 25,000-ft journey underneath San Francisco Bay in July.The nearly five-mile long Bay Tunnel will be the first-ever bored tunnel underneath San Francisco Bay and is a key part of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s $4.6 billion Water System Improvement Program. The program is designed to upgrade the aging Hetch Hetchy Water System, which provides water from the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in Yosemite National Park to 2.5 million people in the Bay Area. The tunnel is expected to be completed by 2015.
