10 Utility Locating Terms Every Trenchless Contractor Should Know
In the trenchless and pipe rehabilitation world, what you don’t see can hurt you — literally and financially. Here’s a straightforward breakdown of key utility locating terms every small-diameter trenchless professional should understand.
Understanding what’s underground is critical to avoiding utility strikes, delays. and liability. This holds true whether jetting a line, installing a liner or pulling new pipe through an existing bore,
Utility locating terminology can feel overly technical. For contractors working in tight corridors and congested subsurface environments, knowing these terms isn’t optional. It’s part of doing the job safely and efficiently.
1. Utility Locating
At its core, utility locating is the process of identifying and marking underground infrastructure. This is done before any digging or trenchless work begins.
This includes everything from water and sewer lines to telecom, gas, and electrical systems. For trenchless contractors, locating is especially important because work often occurs without open trenches. This limits visibility and increasing reliance on accurate pre-job information.
2. Public vs. Private Utilities
One of the most misunderstood concepts in the field is the difference between public and private utilities.
• Municipalities or utility companies typically own public utilities. Marking is done via the 811 system.
• Private utilities are located on private property. Usually beyond the meter or service connection. The 811 system does not cover these. For trenchless pros working on commercial sites, multi-family housing, or industrial facilities, private utilities are often where the real risk lies.
