SprayWall® Restores Pennsylvania Twin Barrel Culverts While Keeping Roadway Open

A deteriorated 72-inch-diameter twin barrel CMP culvert system beneath an active Pennsylvania roadway required structural rehabilitation that could restore the aging infrastructure while maintaining stream flow and minimizing disruption to traffic.

Because the culverts served an active stream, maintaining flow control throughout the project was critical. The rehabilitation approach also needed to avoid the roadway closures and extensive excavation often associated with conventional dig-and-replace projects.

Abel Recon, a Sprayroq Certified Partner, implemented a trenchless rehabilitation approach using SprayWall structural polyurethane lining to restore both culverts without full replacement.

Before rehabilitation began, the stream was temporarily bypassed to create controlled working conditions inside the structures. The culverts were then prepared to provide the proper substrate conditions for application.

SprayWall was applied at a thickness of 500 mils throughout the culverts to restore hydraulic and structural integrity.

Because rehabilitation could be completed from within the existing structures, Abel Recon avoided extensive excavation and kept the roadway above open to traffic throughout the project.

Following application and curing, the bypass was removed, and both culverts were returned to service.

The completed rehabilitation restored structural integrity while preserving the existing culvert configuration and hydraulic function. By rehabilitating the culverts in place, Abel Recon was also able to limit disruption to the traveling public and surrounding environment.

This project demonstrates the advantages of a spray-applied structural lining system in applications where traditional replacement could require substantially more excavation, traffic control, and stream disturbance.

The township now has renewed structural performance, extended service life, and a durable trenchless alternative to full culvert replacement.
