Mechanized Tunneling and Microtunneling Short Course Held in Turkey
The Turkist Society for Infrastructure and Trenchless Technology (TSITT) held a Mechanized Tunneling and Microtunnelng Short Course at the Sanliurfa Hilton Hotel in Turkey Oct. 4-5, with the support of the Turkish Tunneling Society (TSS) and ISTT. Many local and international participants attended this unique mechanized tunneling and microtunneling short course of Turkey.
The Mechanized Tunneling and Microtunnelng Short Course started with a welcoming remarks from TSITT chairman Yasin Torun and TSS chairman and professor Dr. Nuh Bilgin. Afterward, Istanbul Technical University (ITU) associate professor Dr. Cemal made a presentation titled “Site and Laboratory Investigations,” followed by ITU professor Dr. Nuh Bilgin discussing “Principles of TBM Design and Selection, Problems Encountered in Large Diameter TBM Tunneling.” Bahadir Cinar of PENATRADE also made a presentation “Utility Tunneling.”
In the afternoon session, Bilgin gave a presentation on “Machine Selection and Performance Prediction: 25 Years of Experience in Mechanized Excavations in Turkey.” Taner Bilge of MATES made a presentation titled “Wear Protection and Hard-Facing Applications in TBMs,” followed by Dr.Ing.E.h. Martin Herrenknecht of Herrenknecht’s excellent presentation on the “Newest Technology and Trends in Mechanized Tunneling.” ITU professor Dr. Hanifi Copur made a presentation on “Roadheaders and Impact Hammers, Machine Selection, Performance Prediction, Applications,” and Enis Arioglu of YAPI MERKEZI made the last presentation of the day titled “Istanbul Strait Crossing Roadway Tunnel Project.”
The second day started with the presentation of professor Dr. Daniele Peila of POLITECNICO DI TORINO titled ‘Soil Conditioning, Face Treatment and EPB Applications in Italy,” followed by Muammer Cinar of TTS’presentation on “TBM Applications in Gassy Grounds.” Suat Seven of BASF made a presentation on “Chemical Agents in TBM Application” and Fevzi Aksu of IKSA made a presentation on “Mobile Laboratory for Ground-Muck Conditioning Applications in Shielded Tunneling.”
The afternoon session started with the presentation of Ozgur Savas Ozudogru of E-BERK on “Manufacturing of Disc Cutters, Selection of Suitable Disc Masterial for Different Formations, General View and Suggestions.” Dr. Mucahit Namli of IMM (Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality) made a presentation on “Microtunneling Applications in Turkey” and Bilgin made the last presentation of the day on “TBM Applications in Squeezing Grounds, Collapses and Practical Suggestions.” Torun made the closing speech of the short course. All of the participants received ‘Certificate of Training’ for their valuable participation to the short course.
TSITT also announced that Mechanized Tunneling and Microtunneling Short Courses will take place each year in Turkey and invited all individuals, institutions and companies around the world to take place in these events in Turkey in a unique country located in the intersection point of Europe, Asia and Middle East.
