“Introduction to Sewer Cleaning with Jetting Equipment” Video Provides Top-Notch Training

NASSCOIn an effort to set standards for safe and effective pipe cleaning, NASSCO Inc. made a major commitment a few years back to the production of an extensive video focusing on best practices for cleaning and jetter usage — with significant industry support in the production, financing and distribution of the DVD.

NASSCO’s “Introduction to Sewer Cleaning with Jetting Equipment” DVD has been in circulation for nearly two years and the reaction the material presented has been positive.

NASSCO announced its plans to create the training tool in 2010 and was in development for more than a year before its release in March 2012. Its release was the culmination of hundreds of hours of taping and editing to produce a high quality, objective and educational depiction sewer cleaning using jetting equipment. The video was developed to further NASSCO’s mission to set industry standards for the assessment and rehabilitation of underground pipelines, while assuring the continued acceptance and growth of trenchless technologies.

NASSCO recognizes that blockages, root intrusion and other issues can cause major problems for water, wastewater and storm water pipes.  The process of cleaning the pipes can improve efficiencies including better system hydraulics and capacity reclamation. The concern, however, is that the process can sometimes be complicated and, without proper training and understanding, extensive time and resources devoted to cleaning sewer lines can be wasted.

This 55-minute educational video was developed to address some of these concerns. Designed to accompany NASSCO’s “Jetter Code of Practice,” the video is also extremely useful for viewing on its own. “Introduction to Sewer Cleaning Using Jetter Equipment” provides fundamental information about the safe and efficient use of sewer cleaning equipment. It can serve as a basic overview of sewer jetting for beginners, and as a reminder of proper and effective practices for the more experienced workers. Operators can choose to view the video in one sitting or review each section individually.

“[The video] is a great tool for Doheny Companies. We have used it not only as a new hire introduction to our business but also passed it to prospective insurance companies and communities considering a purchase of sewer cleaning equipment.  The video has lots of important information on not only cleaning of sewer pipe but also focuses on safety, related products and latest techniques,” says Doheny Supplies executive vice president Kay Doheny.

The DVD has been an important training tool for many in the pipe cleaning field, using it as an introductory course for those new to the industry, as well as a quick refresher course for sewer cleaning veterans regarding safety and proper techniques in the field. “The Jetter video is an invaluable training and safety tool for junior technicians, as well as a refresher for my experienced operators. We also use the video to allow perspective hires to experience this type of sewer cleaning from a classroom setting,” says Doetsch Environmental Services vice president of field operations Joe Schotthoefer.

“We show it to all of our new hires.  It’s a great visual tool to assist in the learning process. We also incorporate it into our safety training,” adds CES project manager Donnie Fontenot, who is also a Certified PACP Trainer.

The production of this video was made possible by the support of the following NASSCO member sponsors who not only funded the production, but also contributed significant time and resources to the development and filming of this video:

• Platinum Sponsors: Jack Doheny Supplies, Vac-Con; and Vactor Mfg.
