Tulsa Rig Iron Launches National Drilling Mud Disposal Database
Working with software that was purpose built from the ground up specifically for this project, Tulsa Rig Iron developed the National Drilling Mud Disposal Database.
Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) mud disposal is a point of concern in the industry.
As those who work in the sector know, there is a difference between disposing of HDD drilling mud, and petroleum-based oilfield drilling mud. When most contractors arrive at a potential disposal site and say the words “drilling mud,” everyone’s mind goes to oil-based mud and red flags are raised.
The problem is two-fold:
- Educating people that HDD drilling mud is safe to dispose of. According to research studies, it can be beneficial to ground soil conditions. However, if a contractor is drilling through an area that was historically contaminated, that’s another conversation.
- Knowledge of available HDD drilling mud disposal locations across the United States.
As most contractors perform work in areas outside of their normal home region, knowing where to dispose of drilling mud in these unfamiliar areas is problematic. Tulsa Rig Iron felt that addressing this need would be beneficial to our industry.
This database is free to use, brought to you by Tulsa Rig Iron and our industry partners.
The Mud Disposal Database is crowd sourced. Populated by HDD contractors themselves. This handy tool is user friendly either by mobile device or desktop. We have taken the “Take a penny, leave a penny” approach. We encourage contractors to upload known locations in their working areas, knowing that they will need this valuable information when working in other unfamiliar regions.
Contractors can upload either a GPS pin drop or street address, with basic location details. We will confirm the locations and add other important data such as disposal operating hours, contact information, etc. The database will then be populated with these details. When viewing the database, you may view it as a map form with pin drops, or view in a list form sortable by state.
First-time visitors must register to ensure you are a real person and not a spam bot. We continually update this database, providing clean and accurate information. Future plans include adding categories, such as service companies.
This Mud Disposal Database is not only for large contractors. We encourage HDD contractors of all sizes to use this new tool.
