Publisher’s Message – The 2022 Trenchless Technology Directory
Every April, the Trenchless Technology staff works tirelessly to compile, edit and layout the annual Directory of the Trenchless Technology Industry, a valuable resource you’ll want to hang on to year-round.

The NASTT No-Dig Show
As expected, the NASTT No-Dig Show did not disappoint! While the attendance was below pre-covid numbers, the energy throughout the show was high and there were a number of new exhibitors on the show floor. Trenchless Technology celebrated its 30th anniversary at No-Dig by showcasing the inaugural issue in our booth and asking attendees to sign our 30th-anniversary banner, including the number of years they’ve been in the industry.
Be sure to mark your calendars for the 2023 No-Dig Show in Portland, Oregon, April 30 – May 4. If you’re interested in exhibiting and/or presenting a session in 2023, check out the show website for details: nodigshow.com.
28th Annual Microtunneling Short Course
Shortly after the No-Dig Show, I headed out to Scottsdale, Arizona, for the 28th annual Microtunneling Short Course, organized by Tim Coss, Levent Ozdemir and Trenchless Technology. Course attendance was one of the highest ever with 160-plus registrants from all over the world, including the United States, Canada, Japan, Belgium, Indonesia, Germany and Switzerland. I had the opportunity to meet microtunneling experts with a lifetime of experience in the field, project owners who were coming to learn about microtunneling, contractors looking to get into the industry, and a few of the winners of the 2022 Microtunneling Achievement Awards. If you want to learn about microtunneling and meet the who’s who of the industry, this course is for you. For 2023 dates and updates, check out the website at microtunnelingshortcourse.com.
Rising Costs, Labor Shortages
It’s been headline news in North America for more than a year now and it is a major topic of conversation for project stakeholders in the trenchless industry too … labor shortages and rising costs of materials. While no one really seems to know when material costs will even out and the worker shortage will end, it doesn’t appear to be anytime in the near future. So, the real question is what do we do about it?
Trenchless Technology editor Sharon Bueno and I attended the No-Dig session, “Rapidly Rising Costs on Trenchless Projects” — a panel discussion moderated by Joe Lane with Aegion. The panelists – including manufacturers, as well, as an engineer, contractor, and owner – talked about significant material increases, labor shortages and product delays; how these industry challenges affect each perspective and the overall project; and mitigation strategies. Keep an eye out for the July issue which will include more on this topic, including a recap of the panel discussion.
As always, the Trenchless Technology staff is here to serve you, our readers. Please feel free to reach out to me at kvannatten@benjaminmedia.com or 234-380-3030 if you have any topic suggestions or comments.
Until next month!
