Pipeline Contractors Association of Canada Celebrates Diamond Anniversary

The Pipeline Contractors Association of Canada (PLCAC) met in Vancouver, B.C., May 11-15 for its 60th annual convention. This Diamond Anniversary provided the opportunities for very special convention celebration activities. The venue for the convention was the Westin Bayshore Hotel, overlooking Vancouver Harbor and the iconic Stanley Park.

PLCAC 2013-14 president David Johnston, T.W. Johnston Co. Ltd., kicked off the convention with a party the first night with the theme “Diamonds are Forever.”  On the second night, John Deere treated everyone to a “Splash Bash” party at the Vancouver Aquarium. Wednesday evening featured a “Best of the 60s” theme party, sponsored by Caterpillar.

While fun is always important at PLCAC’s convention, a lot of business also took place. Guest speakers included David Montemurro, Energy East Pipeline Project; Janet Holder, Northern Gateway Pipeline Project; and a special presentation by Chris Hadfield, Canadian astronaut and former commander of the International Space Station. Safety awards were also part of the agenda and the annual Jack Cressey Future Leader Award was presented to Tom Patcka, O.J. Pipelines Canada. Attendees also had the opportunity for optional PLCAC Diamond Anniversary - handing over of the gavelactivities that included a tour of Granville Island, a Vancouver Harbor boat cruise, sea kayaking and a bike tour of Stanley Park.

The final evening featured a 60th Gala Celebration Reception and Banquet. Attendees were treated to a fantastic impressionist — Martin Dube — who entertained the crowd with songs that had been performed by well know personalities over many years. At the close of the evening, Johnston passed the president’s gavel over to the PLCAC president for 2014-15, Mike Prior, Michels Canada.
