Product Showcase – Vermeer Adds HDD Bits to Ultra X3 System

Vermeer expands its Ultra X3 drilling system lineup with two new specialized horizontal directional drilling (HDD) bits. These bits are designed to tackle challenging ground conditions in HDD operations.

The Ultra X3 2Thirty bit handles soft to medium rock formations up to 10,000 psi (68.9 MPa). Meanwhile, the Triple Threat bit delivers exceptional steering control in challenging formations up to 5,000 psi (34.5 MPa). Both HDD bits join the existing Ultra X3 tooling family. They provide contractors with enhanced options for demanding drilling applications. The system maintains the signature non-torqued spline connection for quick tooling changes.

Ultra X3 2Thirty

The Ultra X3 2Thirty bit is engineered for brutal drilling conditions, including harder rock and broken formations. It features two oversized conical teeth positioned at a 30-degree angle for optimal cutting performance. The bit includes strategically placed carbide buttons in key wear areas to help extend bit life. Its rebuildable design contributes to long-term value. The bit offers more stability and durability than traditional options, making it effective before requiring dedicated rock drilling equipment.

Ultra X3 Triple Threat

The Ultra X3 Triple Threat bit combines the proven Gauntlet cross-section with enhanced steering capabilities for tough formations. The bit features three laser-clad carbide conical teeth with a tooth retention groove system. Plus, it has an elongated steering face for improved operator control. Oversized carbide buttons on the steering shoe provide enhanced wear resistance. Meanwhile, the machined relief area in the center contributes to superior steering performance. Like the 2Thirty, the Triple Threat is rebuildable for extended service life.

Both new bits are compatible with all three Ultra X3 drilling systems. They utilize the system’s non-torqued spline connection technology. This allows operators to perform tooling changes quickly using only two knockout dowel pins. It eliminates the need for breakout tongs or specialized tools. The system’s ability to ream directly from the transmitter housing helps reduce operational complexity. It also eliminates starter rods in certain applications and reduces pit size requirements.
