North American UV CIPP Market Poised for Growth

The North American ultraviolet cured-in-place pipe (UV CIPP) market is on the rise, but it still has a long way to go become the dominant cured in place pipe rehabilitation method.

UV CIPP is the primary pipe rehab method in Europe and the United Kingdom, according to Steve Wierzchowski, senior manager, ProKASRO, at HammerHead Trenchless, a division of the Toro Company. However, in North American UV CIPP makes up about 20 percent of the market.

Other experts, such as Chris Larson, general manager of C&L Water Solutions, an Azuria company, estimate that the UV CIPP market share is more like 10 percent in North America.

While UV CIPP has been around for nearly 40 years, the technology has been “under-used” in North America, according to Chris Macey, P. Eng., vice president — Americas conveyance, Americas and global technical practice leader, condition assessment and rehabilitation, at AECOM.

“While the first UV cure was in Belgium in 1987 and it grew rapid in the European/U.K. market, 10 years ago it was in its infancy in North America,” Macey says.

However, over the next five years, these same experts expect the UV CIPP market to grow considerably, with some estimates doubling in size as technology advances improve installation efficiencies and more companies are driven to adopt the method.
