Maui Hosts DCA Annual Meeting

The Distribution Contractors Association (DCA) held its 45th annualconvention Feb. 7–12 at the Sheraton Resort on Maui, Hawaii’s famous Kaanapalibeach. This tropical setting attracted more than 275 attendees and theconvention featured numerous business sessions and exciting theme events.

Preceding the formal convention, the newly formed HDD committee held an HDDSession. Grady Bell, Laney Directional Drilling, and Rick Zavitz, Wyo-Ben,co-chaired this meeting. The meeting principally covered a recent challengingHDD crossing for Hawaiian Electric at Pearl Harbor on Oahu. Project details werepresented by Rodney Chong, Hawaiian Electric, and Creighton Chang, HawaiianDredging Construction Co. Chris Weise and Siggi Finnsson, both of DigitalControl Inc. also discussed the latest developments in “Surveying, As-builts andLocation Monitoring.”

The convention was presided over by Ken Gabrielse, Gabe’s Construction Co.Inc. Ed Shannon, Snelson Companies, was introduced as the 2006-2007 DCApresident. Convention chairpersons were Shepard Poole, The Hallen ConstructionCo. Inc. and his wife, Anne.

Business sessions featured Terry O’Sullivan, Laborers’ International Union ofNorth America, Gerry Shaheen, Caterpillar and current AEM chairman, and SteveGauthier, Gas Technology Institute.

At its annual auction, DCA set a record of more than $217,000. Education isone of the primary benefits of the auction and Ruth Michels of the Michels Corp.announced three more DCA scholarships, amounting to $5,000 each.

DCA will hold its 18th annual mid-year meeting in Sun Valley, Idaho, July19-23, 2006. The 2007 annual convention will be held Jan. 21-25 at Atlantis onParadise Island in the Bahamas.
