CERIU’s Descriptive Sheets on various trenchless rehabilitation techniques were created in 1997 – after several months of research, consultation and validation. The sheets are grouped in The CERIU Binders: Underground Infrastructures. These sheets were updated in 2002, providing users with access to information on usage standards and the products used.

The recent update of the Descriptive Sheets, 13 in total, which began in 2023, includes updating of standards and regulations; the addition of sketches for each sheet, allowing visualization and an overview of the technique; and the addition of two sheets on terminology and a flowchart of techniques.

The first series of five sheets presents the various trenchless rehabilitation techniques for spot interventions. These non-continuous techniques do not repair the entire section to be rehabilitated. A second series of four sheets focuses on technologies: lining and coating. Indeed, these technologies encompass a set of rehabilitation techniques: lining inserts a sleeve under pressure into the existing pipe, while coating, carried out by

spraying, rehabilitates the pipe and the manhole. A third series of four sheets, recently launched, covers rehabilitation by tubing. This technology refers to a set of techniques for inserting a flexible or rigid pipe inside an existing pipe.

These 13 CERIU sheets offer updated information and include, in addition to technical details, illustrations for a better understanding of the methods.

These sheets are intended for all stakeholders involved in the rehabilitation of drinking water and sewer networks. You can consult and down- load these sheets (in French) on the CERIU website: https://shorturl.at/JtqFb

The North American Society for Trenchless Technology Great Lakes, St. Lawrence & Atlantic Chapter (GLSLA) has begun to roll out our planned activities for the year.

Our By-law committee has been reviewing our by-laws and we planned to do a full update of them in the coming year after NASTT updates there By-laws.

Our Seminar and Events Committee is continuing the planning a Trenchless Insights Seminar for fall. We are also looking at more opportunities to provide our members the chance to see trenchless technologies being installed in real world site visits that will be offered to our members. The site visits are a great way to give our members exposure to see trenchless installations in-person, providing a learning and net- working events.

In Winter 2025 we hosted a Student information seminar for University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The seminar topic was Trenchless Asset Management and Rehabilitation. There were over 200 attendees at the session which was a great success to build trench- less awareness on the east coast of Canada. This was the first of many new planned session. Next years plan is to have a similar session in Dalhousie University in Halifax Nova Scotia.

As Chairman of the North American Society

for Trenchless Technology’s British Columbia Chapter (NASTT-BC), I’m pleased to report that 2025 is shaping up to be a landmark year for our trenchless community. This October, Vancouver will proudly host the 2025 No-Dig North & ISTT International No-Dig conference. No-Dig North is Canada’s premier annual event dedicated entirely to trenchless technology.

This year’s event promises to be more than a technical conference; it will be a global celebration of innovation, sustainability, and collaboration. With attendees representing over 25 international chapters from around the world, we’re preparing to welcome engineers, contractors, municipal representatives, manufacturers, utility owners, and consultants who are united by one vision: to advance sustainable, cost-effective infrastructure solutions.

As we prepare to host the global trenchless community in Vancouver, we are curating a tech- nical program and exhibit hall that reflects the full scope and promise of our industry.

From asset rehabilitation, HDD, and CIPP to Microtunneling, pipe bursting, and condition assessment, the technologies on display will show what is possible when innovation meets purpose. Our chapter is working diligently with NASTT National and ISTT to make this year’s event not just a conference, but a platform for education, collaboration, and change. Attendees will find tailored programming that benefits:

  • Public works officials, engineers, and senior city staff
  • Sewer, water, gas, pipeline, and industrial contractors
  • Utility and energy providers
  • Consultants and damage prevention profes- sionals
  • Environmental, safety, and sustainability personnel

We invite you to be a part of this transformative event. No-Dig North 2025 in Vancouver is more than a conference — it’s a call to action. It’s a chance to reimagine how we approach infra- structure with the future in mind.

Together, we can elevate trenchless from a technical option to a policy-aligned, globally adopted standard that benefits people, projects, and the planet.

NASTT NW

NASTT-NW

Our  Calgary Section team has been working hard organizing and promoting the Calgary Trenchless Symposium. The Symposium includes two trenchless 101 courses on June 2. June 3 features 10 technical presentations and several networking opportunities, as well as a small tradeshow.

One of our key goals moving forward is to expand educational opportunities across the entire NW Chapter region. In Alberta, we’re fortunate to have a strong concentration of professionals and resources that enable us to host events like the Symposium and our technical lunch programs in Edmonton and Calgary.

Beyond Alberta, we’re actively working to build engagement and value across the region. In Winnipeg, we’ve collaborated with the Student Chapter to host technical sessions, with more planned for the near future.

We’re working to launch technical sessions and courses aimed at bringing together trench- less practitioners and students in Saskatoon and Regina. The NW Chapter is committed to supporting trenchless education and community-building throughout the Northwest, and we look forward to continuing these efforts with your support.

New energy and fresh ideas are flowing in as we revitalize our Edmonton Section. Many en- thusiastic volunteers have joined our long-term contributors to help us grow and innovate. A special thanks goes to Matthew Devitt, of Stantec, who has stepped into the role of Edmonton Sec- tion leader.

Our NW Chapter Board is also evolving. Craig Pass has stepped in to take the seat vacated by Keith Moggach. We welcome Tucker Toelke as our national board liaison, part of a broader NASTT initiative to enhance chapter-national communications. We have one open director position, which we aim to fill before this column is published. Additional leadership changes are expected in October, as executive roles transition and board terms come up for renewal.

Email gbontus@azuria.com or visit nastt- nw.com for more information about getting involved.

OWWA

The 2025 OWWA Conference and Trade Show brought over 1,000 delegates and more than 100 exhibitors to The Town of The Blue Mountains, transforming the Blue Mountain Village into what some attendees affectionately dubbed “OWWAville.”

This year’s conference opened with a compel- ling keynote from evolutionary biologist and television personality Dr. Dan Riskin, setting the tone for the days ahead. The technical program offered 16 distinct streams, addressing key issues in Ontario’s water sector, from climate change to groundwater treatment and distribution.

The board welcomed new members Kathleen Farrow (CIMA+) and Gillian Harris (Diameter Services), while saying a heartfelt farewell to Sonya Semanuik, outgoing Director, and Ed Bertolo, Past President.

The operator competitions drew huge crowds and delivered edge-of-your-seat excitement, with the Region of Peel dominating by winning both the Men’s and Women’s Pipe Tapping Chal- lenges, as well as the Women’s Hydrant Chal- lenge. The City of Welland took top honours in the Men’s Hydrant Challenge, while Durham Region’s Micah De Jong claimed victory in the Meter Challenge.

A crowd favourite event was the OWWA Manufacturers & Associates Council’s “No Water… No Beer Village Pub Crawl”, complete with a western twist, proof that OWWA knows how to blend business with some boot-scootin’ fun.

With another successful year behind us, be sure to mark your calendar: the 2026 OWWA Conference will take place in Niagara Falls, May 4–6.
